Your wedding is getting closer! Four to five months before your wedding is an important stage of the planning process. The biggest decisions may already have been made, but now it is time to confirm your suppliers, develop the visual details of the day and start creating a clear wedding schedule.

As a wedding photographer, I always recommend thinking about photography while making these decisions. Your choice of outfits, hair and makeup, décor, timings and bridal party organisation can all influence how your final wedding photographs look.

Here is your 4–5 months before the wedding checklist for a well-organised celebration and beautiful wedding pictures.

By this stage, your main wedding suppliers should ideally be selected and their services confirmed.

Make sure you have written agreements with important suppliers such as your:

• Wedding venue
• Wedding photographer
• Videographer
• Wedding planner
• Florist and decorator
• Hair and makeup artist
• Entertainment and DJ
• Caterer
• Transport provider

Confirm Your Wedding Photographer Early

If you have chosen your wedding photographer, make sure your booking is officially confirmed.

It is also a good time to begin discussing the structure of your wedding day. Your photographer can advise you about the amount of time needed for bridal preparations, family photographs, couple portraits and important moments throughout the day.

Planning these details early can help you avoid rushing your photography on the wedding day.

Create one organised document containing the contact information for every wedding supplier.

Include the supplier's name, company, telephone number, email address and the service they are providing.

Share Important Supplier Details With Your Wedding Planner

Keeping everything in one place makes communication much easier, particularly as your wedding gets closer.

Eventually, your wedding photographer may also need contact details for your wedding planner or venue coordinator. This can be extremely helpful on the day because small organisational questions can be resolved without constantly interrupting the bride or groom.

Your bridal hair and makeup can have a significant influence on your wedding photographs, so this is a good time to secure your preferred wedding hair and makeup artist.

Look through their portfolio and choose someone whose work matches the overall style you want for your wedding.

Think About How Your Makeup Will Look in Photographs

Wedding makeup should look beautiful both in person and in professional photographs.

Consider your ceremony time, lighting, season and whether your celebration will continue late into the evening. Your makeup needs to remain fresh through emotional moments, photographs, hugs, dancing and possibly warm weather.

For example, make sure there is enough time between getting ready and leaving for the ceremony, as well as dedicated time for group photographs and your couple photoshoot.

By now, your wedding style should be taking shape.
Approve the main décor concept and finalise sketches with your florist, decorator or wedding planner.

If your guest list is not yet final, now is the time to organise it properly.

Create a list of confirmed guests and start identifying immediate family members and other people who are particularly important to you.

You do not need to create your final photography list four months before the wedding, but it is helpful to start thinking about the family combinations you definitely want photographed.

Keeping the formal group list organised and realistic will help your photographer complete these photographs efficiently, leaving you more time to enjoy the celebration.

If you haven't already done so, choose your bridesmaids and officially ask them to be part of your wedding.

From a photography perspective, bridesmaids can add wonderful energy to bridal preparation photographs.
Think about who you would like to have with you while getting ready. A relaxed room with your closest people usually creates much more natural photographs than an overcrowded preparation space.

Now you can start developing a coordinated style for your wedding party.
Consider colours, fabrics and how formal you want everyone to look.

Coordinate Without Making Everything Identical

Your bridesmaids and groomsmen do not necessarily need to look exactly the same.
A coordinated colour palette can create a sophisticated result while allowing individual members of your wedding party to choose styles that suit them.
This can look particularly beautiful in group wedding photographs.

Once you have established the overall look, start choosing or ordering the outfits.
Remember the smaller details too, including shoes, jewellery, ties, bow ties, pocket squares and other accessories.

On the wedding morning, your photographer may photograph accessories and details as part of the story.
For the bridal morning, I recommend preparing important items together before the photographer arrives, such as your wedding dress, shoes, jewellery, perfume, invitations, rings and other meaningful details.
This saves time and allows your photographer to concentrate on documenting the people and emotions around you.

If you are planning to have your wedding dress or suit made especially for you, four to five months before the wedding is an important time to make progress.
Find your designer, discuss your ideas and begin developing sketches.

Consider Movement as Well as Appearance

When choosing your wedding outfit, think about more than how it looks while standing still.
Can you walk comfortably? Can you sit easily? Can you raise your arms, hug people and dance?

A carefully planned wedding day gives your photographer time to document what is happening naturally rather than constantly trying to catch up with a delayed schedule.

The goal is not to plan every photograph. In fact, many of the most meaningful wedding pictures happen completely spontaneously. Good planning simply creates the time and environment in which those moments can happen naturally.

Four to five months before your wedding, focus on confirming suppliers, organising contacts, choosing your hair and makeup team, planning your hairstyle, finalising décor, developing your guest list and organising your bridesmaids and groomsmen.
